Body language

Updated : July  5 , 2019

“A species’ survival depends critically upon its ability to communicate effectively, and the quality of its social life is determined in large measure by how and what it can communicate.”
~Robert M. Krauss

Non verbal communication, Listen to a person When they look at you , not just when they are talking to you.
Listen to a person When they look at you .

Body language or non verbal communication :

Communication is not only what you say or hear . Your eye gaze, hand movements, sitting and standing styles, facial expressions all these things include in communication. And this communication is known as Body language or non verbal communication.

Non-verbal communication includes :

facial expressions, the tone and pitch of the voice, and gestures displayed through body language.

What body language reveals :

It can often tell people exactly how you feel, even if you have hardly said a word. Body language is the unspoken element of communication. Body language isn’t always as clear as spoken language , But it reveal  a lot about people .It reveals our true feelings and emotions.  .Understanding  about body language can help to interpret unspoken issues. The things we don’t say still convey volumes of information.

Non verbal communication or body language, what body language reveals? Image
Body language reveals unspoken truths.

Communication through body language :

Some estimates suggest that 7 percent we communicate through words and 93 percent nonverbally or through our body language .
But some studies says that body language may account for between 50 percent to 70 percent of all communication.
Different studies show different results, but whatever they show , it is truth that body language reveal more abut people than verbal language.

Facial expressions :

Facial expressions are among the most universal forms of body language. The expressions used to convey fear, anger, sadness, and happiness are similar throughout the world.

Learn to read eyes, because lips often lie .
Learn  to read eyes because lips often lie.

Postures:

Posture can convey a wealth of information about how a person is feeling as well as hints about personality characteristics, such as whether a person is confident, open, or submissive.
People tend to have much less conscious control over their nonverbal messages than of what they actually saying .Because nonverbal communication is  much more emotional in nature .

Body language or non verbal communication, let us hear your body talk.
Body language reveal more than words.

Non-verbal communication may also be both conscious and unconscious. Facial expressions are particularly hard to control, because we cannot see ourselves to know what we are doing. We may, therefore complicate communication by trying to convey one message consciously, while in fact conveying quite another unconsciously.

Michael Argyle identifies

Five main functions of non-verbal communication:

  •  To express emotions,
  • Communicate interpersonal relationships
  • Support verbal interaction
  • Reflect personality
  •  Perform rituals, such as greetings and goodbyes.

How to enhance verbal and non verbal communication :

Verbal communication is enhanced when a person is an effective listener. Listening doesn’t simply mean hearing; it means  understanding another person’s point of view.

Watching other people’s body language, facial expressions and intonations, and being conscious of your own physicality and feelings can enhance non-verbal communication.
Copy the people you are spending time with and you want to attract them, this strategy is called mirroring .When talking to someone try to copy their facial expressions , gestures and body language.

Maintain eye contact with those who you want to attract. Follow 80/20 rule while talking to someone.  It means ,maintain 80 percent eye contact and 20 percent you can see your surroundings.

Carry a decent smile  . It improves your face value.

Make sure your body language is open ,(No close arms, or cross feet) it indicates that you are relaxed, calm, and confident .

However , the same gesture can indicate a number of different things depending on context.

Our success as an individuals depends upon our ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and non-verbally.

What are emotions?

Updated :24 Jan 2023

What are emotions?

Most of the time we don’t have exact words to explain what we are actually  feeling . And it is quite difficult to differentiate emotions and feelings.
The words “emotions, feelings, and moods” are often used interchangeably. But actually they are not the  same . Emotions are related to, but different from, mood ..

Are emotions and feeling both the same thing?

Emotions are a physiological response to a stimulus, such as happiness, anger, or fear. They are relatively short-lived and specific to a particular event or situation. Feelings, on the other hand, are the conscious experience of emotions and can be more long-lasting and broader in scope. Feelings may also include thoughts, beliefs, and judgments about an emotion.

 Emotions :

are specific physical reactions to a particular event. Their general purpose is to produce involuntary bodily response to a stimulus. That are usually of fairly short duration.
No matter how friendly and caring a person you are , or you want to be, your brain keep saying you things that aren’t so kind when your emotions are triggered

The brain responds to stimuli long before your conscious brain can choose. Your immediate reactions often produce bad results and then instead of trying to undo what happened, you quickly find reasons to justify your behaviour.
If you want to manage your emotions,  start looking inside instead of outside .

Psychologists identify twenty-seven Categories of emotion:

Admiration, adoration, aesthetic appreciation, amusement, anger, anxiety, awe, awkwardness, boredom, calmness, confusion, contempt, craving, disappointment, disgust, empathic pain, entrancement, envy, excitement, fear, guilt, horror, interest, joy, nostalgia, pride, relief, romance, sadness, satisfaction, sexual desire, surprise, sympathy and triumph.

Five main purposes of emotions :

Emotions help us
  •  To take action.
  •  To survive.
  • Strike and avoid danger.
  • To make decisions.
  •  To understand others. Moreover, they help other people to understand us.

~Kendra Cherry (Psychology Expert)

Feelings

are mental associations and reactions to an emotion. They are coloured by our personal experiences and believes.

When you say, "I feel anxious, angry, happy...", you are interpreting emotion by how it feels in your body.

Types of feelings :
There are only three types of feelings

  • pleasant
  • Unpleasant
  •  Neutral

What are emotions, difference between emotions and feelings, list of emotions and feelings.
Feelings vs emotions

Is Feelings and emotions are the same thing?

In response to specific stimuli The emotion comes first and it  is universal. What kind of feelings it will then become varies from person to person and from situation to situation because feelings are shaped by individual temperament and experience.
Emotions are event-driven, while feelings are learned behaviours .

  • Joy is an emotion.

Happiness is a feeling.
  • Fear is an emotion.

Worry is a feeling.
  • Enthusiasm is an emotion.

Contentment is a feeling.
  • Anger is an emotion.

Bitterness is a feeling.
  • Attraction is an emotion.

Love is a feeling.

Expressing all types of emotions, even negative emotions, is natural and healthy.

Ending words :

An event or  stimulus cause emotions and emotions cause feelings .But same emotions generate different feelings in different people.

I hope now you can fully understand emotions , and differentiate emotions and feelings well .

Definition of psychology

What actually psychology is ?

What will be your answer if someone ask you , what is psychology ?
You will probably say :

  • Science  of mind and behaviour.
  • Study of  human nature and behaviour .
  • Scientific study of the behaviour of humans and animals ....

In this article I am  going to explore what actually psychology is ? So let’s begin.

psychology is a  mixture of two Greek words psychi (spirit or soul) + logos ( knowledge, science or study) .

Like other sciences psychology is hard to define because it evolves continuously  that’s why the phenomena it studies can not be covered in one definition. It has been defined in different ways, all these ways  comes from different perspectives.

APA definition of psychology  :

Psychology is the study of the mind and behavior, according to the American Psychological Association. (APA) It is the study of the mind, how it works, and how it affects behaviour.

How psychology evolve into science of behaviour :

In beginning psychology was considered as science of soul , then science of mind , and in modern age it is known as science of behaviour .

What Psychology explore and study :

Psychology is a broad field that explore and study   personality, development ,behaviour, thoughts ,consciousness, motivation, memories, feelings ,fears , creativity, addictions and much more. Due to its  multifaceted discipline it includes many sub fields such as educational psychology, forensic  psychology, developmental psychology  , clinical psychology , industrial psychology,  social psychology,  cognitive psychology and more.
If I say that psychology is science of life it will not be wrong .Because it covers all most all area’s  of life .

Psychology is an art :

“Psychology is an art which presents itself as  science “.
~Eric pettifor

Seriously dealing with nonsense , Failures , heart breaks , negative thoughts is an art . And psychology gives you a chance to master this art .😊

What is psychology?
Psychology says

“The study of human nature may be thought of as an art with many tools at it’s proposal , an art closely related to all the other arts , and relevant to them all , in literature and poetry particularly ,this is especially significant. It’s primary aim must be to broaden our knowledge of human beings , that is to say ,it must enable us all to become better, fuller and finer people.”
~Alfred Adler

The mind is highly complexed thing no one can fully understand it . The functions  of all human brains are  same, but  we all react differently on same stimuli. Reason is we perceive,  feel and deal with  things differently .

What actually psychology is?
What actually psychology is ?

“Me : everything is ok
Is actually “ lie”
They tell me exaggerated stories of their life's tragedies
Is actually “lie”
It is all about perspective”
~Sadia Arshad

Ending note :

In the end I must say psychology answer a simple question :

  • Why we do?
  • What we do ?

Give your feedback regarding what you think what actually psychology is ?
Thanks!
